Observation is one of the most fundamental of the science process skills. It is also a fundamental act of a caring person. Observational skills cannot be taught in isolation. Teachers need to model how students can make and record observations. One of the best ways to do this is through a passion you have. As a sixth grade, middle school science teacher, I have tried to teach and enlighten my students about Observation skills through my passion of bird watching. I use birds as the vehicle to teach observation skills. It is my belief that those students who have good, well developed observational skills have the ability to see their world more 3- dimensionally so that they can see the interconnectedness of their environment. This workshop will introduce you to some of the activities and projects I regularly do with my students, their families, and folks in their community. These activities can serve as a model you can use to teach observation skills through your passion.
